2 Months Together: What the Second Monthsary Means, Whether It Is Too Early for a Gift, and Ideas That Fit
The first monthsary is a little bit of a joke. You both know it is early, you both know it is sweet, and you both half-expect the other person to have forgotten. Two months is different. By the second monthsary you have met at least some of each other's friends, you have had one small misunderstanding and survived it, and the question of whether this is a thing has quietly answered itself. It is the first milestone that most couples celebrate on purpose rather than by accident.
This post is for anyone whose two-month mark is coming up and who is not sure what, if anything, to do about it. It covers what the second monthsary actually means, how to be certain of the date, the awkward gift question, and a set of ideas that match the stage you are at rather than overshooting it.
What a second monthsary means
A monthsary is the monthly version of an anniversary: the same day of the month you got together, counted forward. Your second monthsary is therefore two calendar months after your start date. If you started dating on the 14th of August, your second monthsary is the 14th of October. If you are not sure which day counts as the start, our guide on which date counts as your relationship anniversary walks through the options; most couples pick the day they made it official rather than the first date.
In relationship terms, two months is often described as the end of the very first phase. The novelty is still there, but it has settled into something you can rely on. You know roughly how the other person texts, what their week looks like, which things make them laugh. Celebrating two months is not about marking a huge achievement; it is a way of saying, out loud, that you both noticed the shift from new to real.
How to work out the date, including the 29th, 30th and 31st
For most start dates the arithmetic is trivial: same day, two months on. The edge cases are start dates late in the month. A couple who started on the 31st of August has no 31st of October problem, but a couple who started on the 31st of December will find that February has no 31st. The convention almost everyone uses is to celebrate on the last day of the short month, so the 28th or 29th of February, and then go back to the 31st when the month allows it. Our post on starting to date on the 31st explains the reasoning and the alternative of celebrating on the 1st.
If you want to stop doing the mental arithmetic every month, a days-together counter does it for you. CountingUs shows the exact number of days, months and years since your start date and flags the next monthsary before it arrives, which is useful precisely at the two-month stage when neither of you wants to be the one who forgot.
Is two months too early for a gift?
This is the question people actually search for, and the honest answer is that a gift is optional and a gesture is not. At two months, an expensive present can land badly: it raises the stakes, it creates an expectation of reciprocity, and it can make the other person feel the relationship is moving faster than they are. A small, specific, inexpensive thing that shows you have been paying attention almost always lands better than something that cost real money.
A good test is whether the gift could only have come from someone who knows them. The snack they mentioned missing from home, a second-hand copy of the book they keep quoting, a playlist of the songs from your first two months, a photo of the two of you printed and put in a cheap frame. None of these cost much, and all of them say the right thing. If you both agree in advance to skip gifts entirely, that is fine too, and it removes the guessing game. The only bad outcome is one person turning up with a wrapped box and the other with nothing, so a quick 'are we doing presents?' text a few days before is not unromantic, it is kind.
- •Keep it under the cost of a nice meal out, and usually well under.
- •Make it specific to something they said, did or like.
- •Handwritten beats printed, and printed beats a bare link.
- •If in doubt, give an experience you can do together rather than an object.
Twelve two-month ideas that fit the stage
The best second-monthsary plans are slightly more deliberate than a normal date without becoming an occasion. Here are twelve that work for most couples and most budgets.
- •Recreate the first date, in the same place if you can, and notice everything that is different this time.
- •Cook together at home. Pick a dish neither of you has made before, so you are both equally bad at it.
- •Write each other a short note, three or four lines, about one moment from the last two months you want to remember. Swap them over dinner.
- •Take the same photo you took on your first week, in the same pose, and keep doing it every monthsary.
- •Do a sunrise or sunset together, depending on which of you is a morning person, and make it the one time the other one does not complain.
- •Build a shared playlist of the songs that have come up in the last two months, and play it on the way to wherever you are going.
- •Go for the long walk you keep saying you will go for, with no phones out for an hour.
- •Try the street food or the cafe one of you has been talking about since the first week.
- •Have a small 'two months in review' conversation: one thing you loved, one thing you want more of. Keep it light; it is not a performance review.
- •If you are long distance, plan a video call with the same food delivered to both ends, and watch the same film at the same time.
- •Set a tiny joint goal for the next two months: a place to visit, a thing to learn, a habit to start together.
- •Do nothing special at all, but say the date out loud and mean it. For some couples that is the whole celebration, and it counts.
What to write on a two-month monthsary
Messages for the second monthsary should be warm without being heavy. Two months in, 'I am so lucky to have found you' can feel like a lot; 'two months of you making my ordinary days better, here is to many more' usually feels right. Mention one concrete thing from the last two months rather than a general compliment. 'Happy second monthsary. I still think about you laughing at the broken umbrella' will be remembered long after 'you are amazing' is forgotten.
If you want more phrasing, our post on monthsary wishes and messages has a full set by tone, and the happy-monthsary reply guide covers what to say when the message arrives before you have had your coffee.
Common questions about 2 months together
Is it the second monthsary or the two-month anniversary? Both are used. Monthsary is the usual word in the Philippines, India and much of South and Southeast Asia; 'two-month anniversary' is more common in the UK and US even though an anniversary strictly means a year. Our post on monthsary versus anniversary covers the vocabulary.
Do you count from the first date or from becoming official? Whichever you both agree on, but most couples count from the day they became a couple. Pick one and write it down, because the monthly maths depends on it.
Is it strange to celebrate every month? Not if you both enjoy it. Plenty of couples celebrate monthsaries for the first year and then switch to the anniversary only; others keep a small monthly ritual for years. There is no rule, only what the two of you find fun rather than tiresome.
What comes next? The third monthsary, which for many couples is the point where the relationship starts to feel like part of ordinary life. Our 3 months together guide picks up from here.
The point of marking two months
You will not remember most of your second month together in detail. You will remember whether somebody noticed it. Marking two months is a small, cheap act of noticing, and relationships are built out of exactly those. Pick one idea from the list, say the date out loud, and let the next milestone take care of itself.
