3 Months Together: What the Third Monthsary Means and How to Celebrate It

Three months in, something changes. The first monthsary was a surprise ('wait, has it been a month already?'), the second was a little performance, and the third is the one where you stop counting days because you are nervous and start counting them because you are happy. If you have typed '3 months together' or '3 month anniversary' into a search bar this week, this post is for you: what the third monthsary actually means, how to get the date right, what to do, and what to say.

A quick note on the word, because people ask. A monthsary is a monthly anniversary, so 3 months together is your third monthsary. Some people call it a 3-month anniversary, which is technically a stretch (anniversary means yearly) but everyone understands it. Use whichever your partner uses.

What 3 months together means

Three months is roughly thirteen weeks, around ninety days, and it is the point where most couples have seen each other tired, hungry, stressed about work and bored on a Sunday afternoon. The honeymoon glow is still there, but it is no longer the only thing holding the two of you together. That is why the third monthsary feels bigger than the second: it is the first milestone that says 'we are still choosing this after the novelty wore off a little'.

It is also, for a lot of couples, the point where the small decisions start: whether you tell your parents, whether you are 'official' on social media, whether you plan something more than a week ahead. None of those have to happen at three months. But if you are feeling them, that is normal, and the monthsary is a nice excuse to talk about them without making it a Big Conversation.

What it does not mean: that you have to have hit any particular milestone, said any particular words, or be anywhere in particular. Couples move at wildly different speeds. Three months of a long-distance relationship, three months of seeing each other every day and three months of two dates a week are three very different things, and all three count.

Working out the exact date

Your third monthsary is the same day-of-month as the day you started dating, three months later. Started on the 14th of July, your third monthsary is the 14th of October. Simple, except for two traps.

First, which day counts as day one. Most couples use the day they agreed to be together ('officially'), some use the first date, and a few use the first kiss. There is no rule; there is only whatever the two of you decided, and if you never decided, three months in is a good time to pick one, because it will come up every month for years. We wrote about this choice in more detail in our post on which date counts as your anniversary.

Second, the 31st problem. If your day one was the 29th, 30th or 31st, some months do not have that date. The usual fix is to celebrate on the last day of the shorter month, or on the first of the next month; again, just agree once and stick to it. If you want the exact number of days rather than months, a days-together counter does the arithmetic for you and shows the running total every day.

12 ways to celebrate your third monthsary

Three months is not the time for a grand gesture that sets an expectation you will have to beat next month. It is the time for something that says 'I pay attention'. Ideas, roughly from low-key to slightly more effort:

  • •Recreate your first date, but with the awkwardness removed: same place, same order, and you both already know you like each other.
  • •Make a 'three things' list: three things you have learned about them, three things you love, three things you want to do together before six months. Swap lists.
  • •Cook together at home. Pick the dish one of you has mentioned and the other has never made.
  • •A photo of every month so far, printed, in a cheap frame. Three photos now; the frame has room to grow.
  • •Write the monthsary message by hand on actual paper. Three months in, nobody has done this yet, and it lands.
  • •A tiny tradition: the same snack, the same song, the same bench every monthsary. Start it now, while there is no pressure.
  • •A day with phones away. Not an event, just a Saturday where you are both fully there.
  • •If you are long-distance, a scheduled video date with the same meal ordered at both ends, and a countdown to the next visit that you both watch.
  • •Learn one thing they are into. Their sport, their show, their game. Give it an honest hour.
  • •A small gift that references an inside joke rather than its price. The three-month gift should make them laugh, not gasp.
  • •Plan the six-month milestone together, loosely. Knowing there is a 'next' is itself a nice feeling at this stage.
  • •Say the thing you have been meaning to say, if there is one. Three months is early for some words and exactly right for others; only you know which.

What to write in a 3 months together message

Keep it specific and keep it short. The best monthsary messages mention one real moment from the last month, say one true thing about how you feel, and look one step ahead. A template, not to copy but to shape yours around:

'Three months ago I was not sure what this would turn into. Now I know what your 7 a.m. voice sounds like and that you hum when you cook, and I like both more than I expected to. Happy third monthsary. Here is to the next three.'

If writing is not your thing, three lines will do: 'Happy 3 months. Thank you for [one specific thing]. Looking forward to [one specific thing].' Specific beats poetic every time. Things that can go wrong at three months (and how to not let them)

The three-month mark has a reputation, mostly from internet dating lore, as the point where relationships end. The reasoning is that this is when people stop performing and you see who they are. There is a kernel of truth in it, and a healthier way to think about it: three months is when you find out whether you like the actual person, not the first-date version. If you do, that is excellent news. If you are having doubts, the monthsary is not the moment to force a celebration you do not feel; it is a moment to be honest, kindly.

The other common failure is mismatched expectations about the day itself. One of you planned a dinner; the other forgot entirely. The fix is boring and effective: put the date somewhere you both see it. A shared countdown or a counter page that you can both open from a QR code on the fridge means nobody is caught out, and nobody has to pretend they did not need the reminder.

After three months: the milestones that come next

If you like counting, the next ones worth marking are 100 days (usually a few days after your third monthsary, and oddly satisfying), the six-month half-anniversary, then one year. Some couples also celebrate 200 and 500 days. You do not have to do all of them; most couples settle into celebrating a few that matter to them and letting the others pass with a text.

Whatever you pick, the easiest way to never lose track is a counter that runs on its own. CountingUs lets you set your day one once and see the days, months and upcoming milestones for the two of you, on a page you can open from a QR code, with no app to install. Set it up now, and your third monthsary message next time will write itself, or at least the date will be right.
