4 Months Together: What the Fourth Monthsary Means, Why It Feels Different, and Simple Ways to Celebrate It

The first monthsary gets the flowers, the third gets the 'we made it past the three-month mark' relief, and the sixth gets a proper dinner. The fourth monthsary usually gets forgotten, and that is exactly why it is worth a post. Four months together is the first milestone that is not a 'first' of anything. The novelty has settled, the big questions have mostly been answered, and what is left is the actual shape of the relationship: the weeknight routine, the inside jokes, the first disagreement you both survived. That makes it a quieter milestone, but a more honest one.

This guide covers what four months together means for most couples, how to work out which date counts as your fourth monthsary, what to write in a 4 months message or caption, and a handful of ways to mark it that fit a Tuesday as easily as a weekend. If you are new to the word itself, start with our explainer on what a monthsary is and how to celebrate it, then come back here.

What four months together usually looks like

Relationship writers often talk about a 'honeymoon phase' that runs for the first few months, and while every couple is different, four months is roughly where many people notice it changing. The infatuation is still there, but it stops being the only thing. You have seen each other tired, stressed and unglamorous. You have probably met at least a few of each other's friends. You may have had your first real argument, and if you are reading this, you got through it.

What replaces the glow is not less romantic; it is just quieter. Four months is when couples start building small rituals without planning to: the same cafe on Sunday, a show you only watch together, a particular good-night message. It is also when the relationship becomes visible to other people. Family starts asking. Colleagues notice. On a days-together counter, the number is now comfortably past a hundred, and it stops feeling like a countdown and starts feeling like a record.

None of this is a rule. Some couples are still in a full honeymoon glow at four months, and some long-distance couples feel the opposite, because four months apart is a long time. The milestone is less about a feeling and more about a fact: you have been choosing each other for a third of a year.

How to work out your 4-month monthsary date

Your fourth monthsary falls on the same day-of-month as your anniversary date, four months later. If you started dating on 23 June, your four-month mark is 23 October. If you started on the 31st, the fourth month may not have a 31st; most couples then celebrate on the last day of that month, and our post on starting to date on the 31st explains the options.

In days, four calendar months is usually 120 to 123 days depending on which months are involved, so if you count days instead of months, your '120 days together' may land a day or two before or after the calendar monthsary. Either is fine; pick one and be consistent. A days-together counter like CountingUs shows both the day count and the calendar milestone, which settles the argument.

  • •Same day-of-month, four months on: 5 January to 5 May, 14 March to 14 July.
  • •Started on the 29th, 30th or 31st: use the last day of the month if that date does not exist.
  • •Counting days instead: about 120 to 123 days, depending on the months in between.
  • •Different time zones (long-distance couples): agree whose midnight counts.

What to write in a 4 months together message

The trick with a fourth-monthsary message is to avoid repeating the first three. By now 'happy monthsary, I love you' has been sent three times. The messages that land at four months are specific: they mention one small thing that has become normal, and say that you noticed it.

A few starting points you can adapt. Keep the one that sounds like you and delete the rest.

  • •Four months in and I still look forward to your good-morning text. That is the whole review.
  • •Happy 4th monthsary. Somewhere between month one and now, you stopped being new and started being home.
  • •Four months, one argument, zero regrets. Here is to the next four.
  • •To the person who has now seen me before coffee four months' worth of mornings and stayed anyway.
  • •Happy monthsary. Four months ago I was nervous to text you first. Now I just do.
  • •Four months together. I know your coffee order, your worst song and your best laugh. Still learning the rest.
  • •For long-distance couples: Four months and 1,000 kilometres, and you are still the closest person to me.

Low-key ways to celebrate the fourth monthsary

Four months is not the milestone for a grand gesture, and most couples would find one slightly odd. It suits the small, deliberate kind of celebration: something that acknowledges the date without turning it into an event. If the fourth monthsary falls on a weekday, that is almost better; the point is to make an ordinary evening slightly less ordinary.

The ideas below are meant to be mixed and matched. Pick one for a weeknight, or two for a weekend.

  • •Repeat the first date, cheaply: the same cafe, the same walk, the same dish, and notice what is different about the two of you now.
  • •Write down four things, one per month, that you learned about each other. Read them out. It takes ten minutes and tends to be the part people remember.
  • •Cook together on the actual date, even if it is a Tuesday. One of you picks the recipe, the other picks the music.
  • •Start the ritual you have been meaning to start: a weekly walk, a monthly photo in the same spot, a shared playlist you both add to.
  • •Give something small and usable rather than a 'gift': a book you have talked about, a mug for their desk, a print of a photo from month two.
  • •Long-distance: watch the same film at the same time, or send a four-item care package, one thing for each month.
  • •Put the date on a days-together counter and set the next milestone together, whether that is six months or 200 days, so there is something to look forward to.

Is four months too early for a 'serious' milestone?

Not really, because the fourth monthsary is not asking anything of you. It is not the six-month talk or the one-year decision. It is simply a date on which you have been together long enough that celebrating is normal and short enough that nobody expects a speech. If one of you is more into monthsaries than the other, this is a good one to keep very light: a message in the morning, a nicer dinner than usual, and no pressure.

It also helps to agree now which milestones you both actually want to mark. Some couples celebrate every monthsary for the first year and then switch to anniversaries; others pick a few, such as the first, the sixth and the twelfth. Our post on monthsary versus anniversary, and which dates to celebrate, walks through the common patterns, and the one on whether couples still celebrate monthsaries after the first anniversary covers what tends to happen later.

What comes next

After four months, the next milestones most couples notice are five months, 150 days, the half-year mark at six months, and 200 days together. Six months is the first one that often gets a proper celebration, so if you are keeping the fourth low-key, that is a good place to spend the effort instead. Our guide to the six-month anniversary covers the meaning and ideas for it.

For now, four months together deserves what it is: a small, real milestone, best marked by noticing it. Send the message, make the evening slightly nicer than usual, and let the counter keep going.
