Marriage Anniversary or Wedding Anniversary: Which Is Correct, What Each Means, and What to Write on the Card

You are typing a message to your parents, or to the couple whose wedding you danced at last year, and you stop at the second word. Happy marriage anniversary, or happy wedding anniversary? One of them sounds like what everyone around you says. The other sounds like what the greeting-card rack says. Is it marriage or wedding anniversary, and does it matter?

The short answer is that both are correct, both mean the anniversary of the day you got married, and nobody will be offended by either. The slightly longer answer is more interesting, because the two phrases come from two different words that mean two different things, and once you see that, you will know exactly when each one fits.

Wedding versus marriage: the words are not the same

A wedding is an event. It happens on one day, has a venue, guests, food and, in many Indian families, a photographer who outstays everyone. A marriage is the relationship that the wedding begins. It has no end date while it is working and it is going on right now, as you read this. The wedding is the door; the marriage is the house.

An anniversary is the yearly return of a date. So a wedding anniversary is, literally, the yearly return of the date of the event, and a marriage anniversary is the yearly return of the date the relationship started. They land on the same day. The difference is which thing you are picturing when you say it: the ceremony you remember, or the years that have followed it.

Which one is standard

In British and American English, wedding anniversary is the fixed phrase. Dictionaries list it, card shops print it, and the traditional gift list, paper for the first year and silver for the twenty-fifth, is called the wedding anniversary list. If you are writing in a formal setting, for a company newsletter, a newspaper announcement or a speech, wedding anniversary is the safe choice anywhere in the world.

In Indian English, and in much of South Asia, the Middle East and East Africa, marriage anniversary is at least as common, especially in speech and in WhatsApp wishes. Part of that is translation: the Hindi phrase shaadi ki saalgirah and its equivalents in Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Malayalam use the word for marriage, and the natural English rendering keeps it. Part of it is that in India the word wedding tends to be reserved for the days of ceremonies themselves, so marriage anniversary sounds more like the thing being celebrated. Neither usage is wrong. Marriage anniversary is simply the regional standard, the way flat and apartment both describe the same home.

Which should you write

Use the phrase the couple uses. If your parents have said happy marriage anniversary to each other for thirty years, do not correct them with a card. If you are not sure, a few rules of thumb cover most situations.

  • •Writing to older relatives in India: marriage anniversary feels warm and familiar; wedding anniversary is also fine.
  • •Writing in a workplace message, a formal invitation or anything that might be printed: wedding anniversary.
  • •Writing to the couple themselves on their first few anniversaries: either, but the word wedding brings back the day itself, which is often what they want to relive.
  • •Writing about a long marriage, a 25th or 50th: marriage anniversary quietly emphasises the years rather than the party, and many couples prefer that.
  • •Unsure and in a hurry: happy anniversary on its own is always correct and never sounds odd.

Is marriage day the same as the anniversary?

Marriage day, in Indian usage, usually means the actual wedding day, the date on the invitation, and it is also used for the anniversary of that date, as in "it is their marriage day today". Context makes it clear. If you are counting, the first marriage anniversary is one year after the marriage day, not the day itself, and the number you celebrate is the number of completed years. A couple married on 18 October 2025 celebrates their first anniversary on 18 October 2026, not their second.

If your wedding spanned several days, as many Indian weddings do, the anniversary date is the day of the main ceremony: the saat phere, the muhurtham, the nikah or the church vows, depending on your tradition. Couples who want a single number to count from often set up a days-together counter on that date, so the maths is done for them every morning.

The third thing: the dating anniversary

Here the two phrases actually part ways. Many couples also mark the day they started dating, which can be years before the wedding. That is not a wedding anniversary, because there was no wedding, and it is not a marriage anniversary either. It is a relationship or dating anniversary, and whether you keep celebrating it after you marry is a choice every couple makes differently. We have a whole post on choosing between the dating anniversary and the wedding anniversary once you are married, and another on which date counts as the start of a relationship in the first place.

This matters for the card. Happy marriage anniversary to a couple on their dating anniversary will raise an eyebrow; happy anniversary covers both.

Short messages that use each phrase

A few lines you can send as they are, or adapt.

  • •Happy marriage anniversary, Amma and Appa. Thirty-two years of the same argument about the AC remote, and still each other's favourite person. We love you.
  • •Happy wedding anniversary to the two of you. One year ago today we ate too much, danced badly and watched you promise everything. Still the best day.
  • •Happy anniversary. One year of marriage, four years of us, a lifetime to go.
  • •Wishing you a very happy marriage anniversary. May the next year bring the Goa trip you keep postponing.
  • •Happy 25th wedding anniversary. Silver on the calendar, gold in every way that counts.

Does it matter which you choose?

Not to the couple, and not to anyone who loves them. It matters a little to search engines, which is why this post exists, and it matters a little to people who have moved between countries and noticed that the phrase changed when they crossed a border. The thing being celebrated did not change. One day, two people made a promise, and every year on that day the people around them say some version of the same sentence: we are glad you did.

If you want the counting taken care of, a CountingUs page starts on your wedding date, shows the days, months and years since, and comes with a QR code you can print on the anniversary card itself. Call the day whatever your family calls it. The counter will keep going either way.
